Film & Discussion: Resilience -The Biology of Stress & The Science of Hope
Limited Capacity seats available

Researchers have recently discovered a dangerous biological syndrome caused by abuse and neglect during childhood. As the new documentary Resilience reveals, toxic stress can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children, putting them at a greater risk for disease, homelessness, prison time, and early death. While the broader impacts of poverty worsen the risk, no segment of society is immune. Resilience, however, also chronicles the dawn of a movement that is determined to fight back. Trailblazers in pediatrics, education, and social welfare are using cutting-edge science and field-tested therapies to protect children from the insidious effects of toxic stress—and the dark legacy of a childhood that no child would choose.

Remember to Breathe!
Limited Capacity filling up

We all need to breathe to survive. That’s a given. Have you ever thought about how intimately linked respiratory function and postural control are? Here are some of the things we do every day that require those two systems to work together in a coordinated fashion: breathing, coughing, sleeping, eating, talking and moving. That’s quite a list! Additionally, our social-emotional well-being is linked to breathing. Think about how we often hold our breath when we are anxious, nervous, or stressed. Mindful breathing can be a very calming influence.
This presentation will include practical information that can be used at any age. An overview of how the respiratory system works will be interwoven with how it is an integral part of posture, movement, the ability to speak, and overall well-being. Be ready to participate and find out how amazingly connected the human body systems are!

Winter Walk and Talk Morning Session (Nordic Pole Walking)
Limited Capacity seats available

Walk around the campus and the village with colleagues to foster relationships and promote physical wellness.  Sue Benjamin will bring some Nordic Poles to the session.  Attendees are welcome to try Nordic Pole Walking, or they can also walk without the poles.

BENEFITS OF NORDIC POLE WALKING
Nordic pole walking uses both the lower and upper body muscles. The lower body gets the benefits of traditional walking or speed walking, and the poles work the upper body. Because of this combination, Nordic pole walkers benefit from fitness-building stimulation that’s not present in normal walking, as the chest, triceps, biceps, shoulders, and abdominals get a workout along with the leg muscles. The core is also engaged as the walker thrusts forward with the poles.

Nordic pole walking improves cardio-respiratory fitness, especially in older adults for whom resistance training or high-impact sports are not ideal. It can also improve balance and reduce neck pain. It’s a total body workout that’s fun and that encourages a sense of adventure since it can be done everywhere from parks and roads to hiking trails.

Adventurous Team Building Games
Limited Capacity seats available

Team building games from our Project Adventure Unit for staff to experience:
-The first activity is called moon ball - I'd break the group up into two teams. the object is for each team to keep the beach ball in the air only using their hands. A strike goes against your team if the ball hits the floor. Some other minor rules apply. The first team to win two out of three rounds wins.
-The second activity is called faster than a speeding chicken. We would be competing against the 7th grade classes that have already gone during our PA unit. The object is to pass the chicken to everyone in the group as fast as you can without letting the chicken hit the floor. No one is aloud to move their feet during this activity.
-The third activity is called berzerk. We use an omnikin ball during this game. The group forms a square in the middle of the gym. Four players stand inside the square and have to move without getting hit by the omnikin ball. The people forming the square can use their hands to push or bounce the ball into the players. If you get hit, your out. Last person standing wins.
-The forth activity depending on the time is birthday line up. Everyone in the group has to line up in order of their birthday, month and day, not year without speaking.
-The last activity is the transverse climbing wall. After discussion and demonstration anyone is allowed to climb the wall.

Can Nature Improve Your Life?
Limited Capacity filling up

This session will be modeled after a radio podcast on the NPR show "Hidden Brain" called "Our Better Nature: How The Great Outdoors Can Improve Your Life" from September of 2018. I intend to actually play the 25 minute podcast intermittently with discussion and inter-weaved. The session will explore how we can actually quantify the positive impacts of nature to wellness.

SRP-X Training for Substitute Teachers
Limited Capacity seats available

The SRP-X Training is provided though the I Love U Guys Foundation, which was created by the Keyes family, after their daughter, Emily, was killed in a school shooting in 2006. Her last text message to her parents was, “I love u guys,” thus promoting the concept of a foundation to help all schools with safety planning. The program believes that a critical ingredient in school safety is the uniform response to any threat or incident, and regular practice to enforce the procedures. The SRP-X Training explains five clear actions (Lockout, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter, Hold) that can be used during an emergency and gives students visual cues and common language so that they know exactly what action to take to protect themselves. By standardizing the vocabulary students and staff use in emergencies, everyone is better prepared if an incident does ever occur. After the training, staff will be given opportunities to practice using this vocabulary and protocol in drills throughout the school year.

The Wellness Approach: Good Behavior Games
Limited Capacity seats available

Discussion of how PAX correlates with healthy living for each student from elementary through high school and beyond.

The PAX Good Behavior Game is a universal-level classroom-based behavior management strategy for elementary school designed to prevent disruptive activity. Classroom teams are given small rewards for positive behavior such as being on-task or displaying cooperation. It has been successfully implemented across diverse school settings and has been shown to increase academic engagement, reduce disruptive behavior, and to reduce the later development of conduct disorder, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation.

The PAX Good Behavior Game (PAX GBG) teaches children to work together for common goals, and to focus on a positive future they co-create with others. These are core cognitive, emotional, and behavioral skills required for peaceful, productive, healthy and happy lives.

PAX GBG is based on multiple studies of classrooms and teachers in the US, Canada, and Europe and has been referred to as one of the most effective strategies a teacher can currently use in his or her classroom to increase lifetime academic success and to protect children from lifetime emotional and behavioral disorders. PAX teaches students self-regulation, self-control and self-management in the context of working with others and has been proven to improve attention and reduce impulsivity.

Hands-Only CPR
Limited Capacity filling up

This session would instruct people how and when to administer Hands-Only CPR (American Red Cross). Approximately 360,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur annually in the United States and 90% of those victims die without help. People would learn the importance of this type of CPR (no mouth-to-mouth) and spend time practicing on our CPR mannequins so that they would feel confident if they ever had to use it to attempt to save a life. Please note that this is NOT for a certification. Research shows that any CPR is better than no CPR and a cardiac arrest victim has a two to three times greater chance of survival if any type of CPR is administered until professionals arrive.
